Slowworm habitat creation
- Ecological Contracting Project
Client Wiltshire Wildlife Trust
Summer 2002 |

Layering materials to build a slow worm hibernacula
|
| Project outline |
An area of land with planning permission in Trowbridge was found to be inhabited by a large population of slow-worms. Environmental mitigation works agreed as part of the planning application, specified that the slow-worms should be translocated to a suitable habitat. Part of a Wiltshire Wildlife Trust reserve was identified as a receptor site. Further enhancement works were agreed to make the receptor site more suitable. |
| Services provided |
Supply and installation of 350m of reptile exclusion fencing - specification similar to English Nature's guidelines for great crested newts. Construction of slow-worm hibernacula to provide safe places for shelter, nesting and hibernation. The hibernacula consisted of layers of stones, old wood material, compost, netting and sand to form a dome approximately 1.5m high and 3m in diameter. Due to the previous use of the site, the hibernacula could not be buried but instead had to sit above ground as shown in the photo. |
