Great Crested Newt habitat isolation and site clearance
Project outline
Great Crested Newts were found in a drainage ditch to the edge of a residential development site on Lake 10 of the Cotswold Water Park. The area had to be isolated from the rest of the site to allow construction to continue and drift fencing installed to trap off the newts.
Services Provided
JPR Environmental installed about 0.4km of post and sheet amphibian fencing to surround and section the site for trapping. Part of the area consisted of a 10m high and 70m long spoil mound that was to be crossed with 3 lengths of fencing. This had to be hand dug as the banks of the mound were too steep to be trenched mechanically.
The remainder of the area was strimmed and cleared of vegetation to make it a less attractive habitat for newts. During this clearance, pockets of Spotted Orchids were discovered which were retained for later transplantation.
