As part of the redirection of the A49, an old ordnance factory and testing area to the east of Hereford are to be cleared to allow the road through. The Ecological Impact Assessment highlighted the presence of Great Crested Newts in ponds on the site. The area needed to be isolated and the newts translocated before construction started.
Services Provided
JPR Environmental installed approximately 1.2km of post and sheet amphibian fencing to surround and section the site for trapping. There were some lengths of fencing installed the previous year that had been damaged, these were renovated and tied in with the new fencing boundary. The majority of the length could be trenched mechanically but some areas required hand digging due to the marshy conditions.
A potential problem was unexploded ordnance so the site had to be surveyed before trenching commenced and a permit to dig issued.
