During the redevelopment of the old power generation site at Portishead, great crested newts were found to inhabit part of the site.
Environmental mitigation specified that current newt habitats should be isolated to allow surveying, trapping and translocation.
Four distinct areas required isolation by fencing: two where great crested newts may already inhabit; one which would hold amphibians and reptiles found elsewhere on the development site and one possible future nature reserve into which the newts could be translocated.
The nature reserve needed one-way fencing, allowing newts to climb in but not out.
