Wetlands for landowners
If you are a landowner with a permanently or seasonally waterlogged or marshy area on your land, you could be eligible for government grants to create a wetland.
Wetlands can be for water treatment, habitat creation and flood alleviation and could have a number of functions including:
- treating run-off from fields to reduce nitrate and phosphate levels in the manner of buffer pools
- encouraging biodiversity
- storing water at periods of heavy rain to prevent low-level flooding
JPR Environmental has extensive experience designing and creating wetlands including:
- reedbeds
- ponds and small lakes
- buffer pool systems
- scrape, marsh and seasonal wetlands
JPR are able to draw up plans, construct and plant weltlands including defining the resources required, identifying funding sources and even helping with applications for funding from a number of sources including:
- Higher Level Environmental Stewardship payments for creation and ongoing management of wetlands (projects qualify through their benefit to biodiversity)
- Environment Agency (projects qualify if they alleviate or prevent flooding)
- Local drainage boards (again, projects qualify if they alleviate or prevent flooding)
- Local wildlife trusts (projects qualify through their benefit to biodiversity)
As an example, the wetland creation project at Hartpury in Gloucestershire was funded by Gloucestershire First, Rural Renaissance and the Gloucestershire Environmental Trust. It is now attracting a wide range of species, including otter, on what was once an empty piece of boggy land.
Do contact us for more inforamtion to find out if we can help you attract funding to improve your land.
