Site Preparation

Client: Willmott Dixon

Location: Bristol, Ashton Rise

Service: Habitat Restoration

Project Outline:

JPR have been on site from the start to do vegetation clearance and great crested newt fencing on this housing development.

Site preparation for Willmott Dixon

The developer, Willmott Dixon, are working as Bristol City Council’s partner on its plans to develop 133 homes – 53 of them to be let as council housing — on the site of disused allotments and a former children’s home in Ashton Vale.

JPR has worked with Willmott Dixon to get their site in Bristol to a stage where development can start. The area is home to a population of great crested newts which meant that the client had to fulfil certain planning requirements before they could start building. This included a sensitive vegetation clearance which had to take into account the resident newts in addition to checking for the possibility of nesting birds. We were able to use the most appropriate equipment and staff resources to get the job done quickly but also to stick within the planning guidelines: using brush-cutters for tall areas of bramble and scrub and an Avant mower where appropriate.

The fence line for the newt fencing also had to be installed with protected species in mind and we needed to clear the fence line specifically of any vegetation. This was done quickly and involved using cable avoidance tools and the service avoidance plan already completed. On many stretches of the fence line, we were able to use our excavator to dig the trench which saves time on site and creates a clean line for the fence to be installed.

Willmott Dixon were a very professional client to work with and we were able to give them the appropriate staffing, tools and equipment to get their site preparation sorted as quickly as possible. Contact us if we can help with your site preparation project.
