Willow Spiling: sustainable erosion control

Spiling is the most common method of bank revetment using willow.  It involves weaving live willow rods between live willow stakes set into the affected bank at regular intervals.

Willow spiling work is usually carried out between November and April when the willow is dormant. JPR Environmental can install willow spiling but we are also one of the few companies in the UK to supply willow spiling materials for you to do your own installation.

Within a few months, the willow spiling should achieve a dense top growth and a root mat should be formed.  The root mat provides the bank with added strength to withstand erosion arising from wave action. Top growth can be allowed to grow to form a screen for the bank or controlled by cutting or grazing if access is required in the future.

Installing willow walls at a fraction of the environmental and financial cost of concrete piling is a highly sustainable method of bank strengthening. Soft engineering is sensitive to the environment as it allows other plant species to grow through and animals can still access earth banks. As a living material, willow also acts as a carbon store for the future, thus adding to its sustainability credentials.

Erosion control using willow is particularly suitable on sites with reduced access as materials can be carried onto the site and walls need little or no machinery to construct.
